Chris Gallego, a former Irvine infielder, has been named an assistant coach with the Anteater baseball team, Coach Mike Gerakos announced Monday.

Gallego, who played four years with the Anteaters ending in 1990, signed a free-agent contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates organization after college, but was released by the Pirates this summer.

Gallego, brother of Oakland Athletics infielder Mike Gallego, had a career batting average of .309 at Irvine, and hit .370 during his senior year. He twice was a second-team All-Big West Conference selection.
