The Lakers opened camp with their old cast Tuesday while General Manager Jerry West was looking for a new face or two.

He is thought to be close to a deal for Seattle’s versatile Sedale Threatt, the long-sought backup for Magic Johnson, whom they can acquire for a draft choice.

Said West: “I don’t like to get too excited, but we think we’re close--maybe a phone call away.”

Meanwhile, veterans Mychal Thompson and Larry Drew, who weren’t expected to return, did. They’re practicing while awaiting further developments.

“Believe me,” Thompson told reporters, “I’m as surprised to see you guys as you are to see me.”

Anthony Jones, the Lakers’ only drafted rookie, a second-round choice from Oral Roberts, sat out the morning practice, signed a contract and looked good in the evening drill. Jones and Tony Farmer, a 6-foot-9 rookie free agent from Nebraska, are expected to challenge Irving Thomas for the 12th spot on the roster.
