One Inmate Killed, One Hurt in Breakout Attempt

BLANCH, N.C. —
A guard shot and killed one inmate and wounded another during a breakout attempt at the Blanch Youth Institution, authorities said. The shootings occurred Tuesday when four inmates tried to scale a 12-foot chain-link fence. James Ricky Nance, 20, was killed when a tower guard shot him in the back, prison Supt. A. K. Pruitt said.
