Foreign Films Start Rolling at Golden West

Golden West College’s monthlong “Fall Foreign Film” series begins tonight with “Cinema Paradiso,” the winner of the 1989 Oscar for best foreign film.

Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, it stars Philippe Noiret and Leopoldo Trieste and traces the tender relationship between a boy and a movie projectionist in a small Italian town.

The series will continue on Oct. 11 with Francois Truffaut’s “The Woman Next Door” (1981) starring Gerard Depardieu and Fanny Ardant as two lovers who are reunited after a separation of seven years.

On Oct. 18, Carlos Saura’s “Ay, Carmela” (1990), with Carmen Maura, Andres Pajares and Gabino Diego, will be shown. The movie focuses on a cabaret trio captured by Franco’s forces.

On Oct. 25, the series will conclude with Michael Verhoeven’s “The Nasty Girl” (1990), with Lena Stolze and Hans-Reinhard Muller. This one follows a young woman’s investigation into her hometown’s history during World War II.
