Blaine McCallister started slowly, but went on to shoot a one-under-par 69 and lead the Texas Open by one stroke Saturday despite charges by John Cook and Gary Hallberg.

Cook’s 66 and Hallberg’s 65 pulled them into a tie for second at 10-under-par 200 after 54 holes at the Oak Hills Country Club of San Antonio.

McCallister started Saturday’s round leading by four strokes at 10 under, but he bogeyed three of the first six holes.

“I get to 10-under, and all of a sudden I’m feeling invincible,” McCallister said. “Golf is an amazing thing. Every time you think you’ve got it mastered, it’ll jump up and bite you in the butt.”

George Archer flirted with the 50s, but he had to settle for a share of the course record and a one-stroke lead in the $1.5-million Vantage Championship, the richest event on the Senior PGA Tour.

Archer played the front side in seven-under-par 29 at the rain-dampened Tanglewood course at Clemmons, N.C., but he settled for an eight-under 64.

At nine-under 135, Archer was a stroke ahead of Dale Douglass and Simon Hobday.

Meg Mallon was the only player to shoot a sub-par round on the Paradise Palms course at Cairns, Australia, and took a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the Daikyo World Championship.

Mallon shot a one-under-par 72 for a total of 145. First-round leader Danielle Ammaccapane was second at 147 after a 78.
