I would like to draw readers’ attention to one inaccuracy in S.A. Barnett’s article, “Crowd of Highlights on the Rhine,” Sept. 8.

I had to respond to Barnett’s article as a native German from the Middle Rhine and as a German instructor at various colleges. Actually, one of my students who knew that I was from the Rhine area showed me your paper asking me: “Was ist ein rhomer?” (A reference in the story to a drinking glass.) I immediately understood from the context that the proper term is Romer.

The student said: “I wonder why people from The Times who write these articles do not know the language.” Well. . . .
