Fishery Is Making a Comeback
In September of 1988, the Walker River Irrigation District destroyed the East Walker River trophy trout fishery near Bridgeport with a sudden, heavy drawdown of water from the reservoir.
This past week, after three years of court battles by Cal Trout and the California Department of Fish and Game, work started to restore the fishery by pumping out silt and replacing spawning gravel where needed.
“It’s finally happening,” said Rick Rockel, Cal Trout’s stream-keeper there. “And the best part is that some of the fish are already back in the gravel spawning.”
