Nation IN BRIEF : WASHINGTON, D.C. : Jobless Benefits Bill Sent to White House

Congress sent the White House a $6.4-billion emergency unemployment benefits bill that President Bush has pledged to veto. Democratic leaders urged Bush to reconsider. House Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) said the Administration’s contention that the recession is over “is a cruel mockery” of the 3.1 million unemployed workers who have exhausted unemployment benefits. The bill would provide up to 20 additional weeks of benefits. The White House contends that the bill would violate last year’s budget agreement.
