PLATFORM : Moving Into Future

RUE McCLANAHAN, honorary director of the Los Angeles chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, commented on General Motors' use of animals in testing automobile safety. She told The Times:

About 20,000 dogs, pigs, rabbits, ferrets, mice and rats have been thrust against steering wheels, forced to inhale exhaust and had their skin shredded, skulls opened and brains bashed. Frankenstein is alive and well in Detroit.

GM claims that these tests give it an edge in safety, yet the first four autos on the 1991 Insurance Institute’s “highest death rate” list belong to GM, the last auto maker to add air bags. GM was fined $2.8 million for ignoring federal safety laws after a worker was crushed to death. The world’s other auto makers maintain a higher safety record by using crash dummies and computer models.

Until GM realizes that science is about moving into the future instead of dwelling in the Dark Ages, informed consumers will shun Chevrolets, Pontiacs, Buicks, Cadillacs, Saturns, Oldsmobiles and other cars made with genuine GM cruelty.
