After being limited to two field goals in a humbling loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, the Buffalo Bills’ offense--specifically the offensive line--didn’t want people to get the idea that its success early in the season was a fluke.

“All week, (the linemen) kept telling me, ‘Don’t worry about it. We’re going to block well,’ ” Buffalo running back Thurman Thomas said.

The Bills’ line lived up to its word Sunday during a 42-6 rout of the winless Indianapolis Colts.

Thomas ran for two touchdowns and 117 yards. Ken Davis scored on a 78-yard run--the NFL’s longest run from scrimmage this year--and finished with 108 rushing yards for the Bills (6-1).

Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly, the NFL’s top-rated passer, suffered a mild concussion and left the game late in the first half after completing three of five passes for 44 yards. Frank Reich replaced Kelly and completed six of seven passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns.

“When I told him one of our most basic running plays and he said, ‘What’s that?’ I kind of knew he was out of it,” Reich said.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Kelly would miss any games, but the condition wasn’t believed to be serious.

Kelly led the Bills to touchdowns on their first three possessions, and Reich led them to touchdowns on their next three.

All the Colts could muster were Dean Biasucci’s two field goals.

Indianapolis linebacker Duane Bickett said the Colts (0-7) had no way to neutralize the Bills.

“Defensively, we didn’t get them stopped,” he said. “No matter what we did, they countered.”

From the beginning, it seemed like it would be a long day for the Colts.

Ken Clark, replacing the injured Eric Dickerson, fumbled on Indianapolis’ second play, and the Bills recovered at the Colts’ 14. On the Bills’ first play, Thomas ran for the score.

“That was a devastating thing,” Colt Coach Rick Venturi said.

“We knew they would be a real cranked-up football team, and we wanted to withstand anything early and unfortunately, we set a tone there.”

Indianapolis quarterback Jeff George completed 22 of 33 passes for 168 yards.

“(The Bills) came in to prove a point,” George said. “It’s a shame it had to be us.”
