World IN BRIEF : GAZA STRIP : Muslim Activist Given Life Sentence

A Muslim leader prominent in the Palestinian uprising against Israel was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter charges. Sheik Ahmed Yassin, 56, was charged with ordering the slayings of four Arabs suspected of aiding authorities in Israeli-occupied territories. Yassin’s fundamentalist group Hamas, along with the Palestine Liberation Organization, has been active in leading the 3 1/2-year-old uprising against Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
