ABERDEEN, Scotland —
One man died and about 170 workers were plucked to safety by helicopter on Friday as fierce gales lashed oil rigs in the North Sea.
Three drilling rigs were partially evacuated, leaving essential staff behind. A worker died on a fourth when he was hit by a container that shifted when the rig was struck by a giant wave.
The storm also forced two North Sea production platforms to shut down oil output.
