The San Diego Padres exercised the 1992 contract options on shortstop Tony Fernandez and right-hander Ed Whitson.
Because he had come to the Padres in a trade in the middle of a multiyear contract, Fernandez has until 15 days after the World Series to demand a trade. If Fernandez requests a trade, the Padres will have to deal him or modify his contract to his satisfaction.
