Is Kristine McKenna urging us to accept director Gus Van Sant’s dreamy and amoral view of male homosexuality and hustling as enlightened (“Another Risky Road,” Oct. 13)?

She says his new film, “My Own Private Idaho,” will reveal how high our consciousness about homosexuality has been raised.

Or how far it has fallen. I am appalled at the deception conveyed throughout the article, like Van Sant’s statement that the world of gay hustling contains “the beauty of life.” Male prostitution robs all players of dignity and leaves scars that last a lifetime. It can also infect people with AIDS.
