World IN BRIEF : TURKEY : Orthodox Church Names New Leader

The Eastern Orthodox Church elevated Metropolitan Bartholomeos to patriarch to succeed Patriarch Dimitrios I, who died Oct. 2. Patriarch Bartholomeos I, 51, played a key role with Dimitrios I to broaden contacts with re-emerging churches in East Europe. He will preside over 14 autonomous churches, including those of Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Romania and Russia. He also is head of the Australian Eastern Orthodox Church and the Orthodox Church of North and South America.
