Picus Asks to Preserve College’s Open Space
Los Angeles City Councilwoman Joy Picus on Wednesday introduced a motion to preserve as open space undeveloped agricultural property in and around Pierce College.
Joy Nuell, a spokeswoman for the councilwoman, said the motion was a “symbolic proposal” to the surrounding residential community, which wants the agricultural land around the campus preserved. More than half of the 400-acre college is open space, officials said.
College officials said there were no plans to develop the property. Under the Picus proposal, which must be approved by the City Council, zoning of the land would be changed from agricultural uses to open space.
“Residents in the west San Fernando Valley and throughout the city of Los Angeles recognize the unique educational opportunities provided by Pierce College and treasure the historic agricultural uses and open space as valued community assets,” the motion said.
The area in question is centered mostly around large farm fields between Mason and De Soto avenues south of Victory Boulevard.
