Riding in tandem with the building slump in Orange County has been the decline in construction industry jobs. From 1989 to 1990, the number of jobs dropped almost 5% here--the worse scenario in the Southern California region. Only in San Diego County was there also a decline, but it was at half the rate suffered in Orange County. In Southern California as well as statewide, there were gains. Here’s how Orange County construction job numbers compare to the rest of urbanized Southern California:

County 1989 1990 % Change Los Angeles 154,400 160,500 +3.9 Orange 72,500 69,000 -4.8 Riverside-San Bernardino 65,300 67,500 +3.4 San Diego 63,800 62,300 -2.4 Ventura 16,900 17,800 +5.3 REGIONAL TOTAL 372,900 377,100 +1.1 STATEWIDE 648,100 667,300 +2.9
