CAMARILLO : Condominium Plan Gets a New Chance

The Camarillo City Council on Wednesday gave new life to a bid by the Spanish Hills Development Co. to add 50 condominiums to its west Camarillo housing project, agreeing to postpone a final decision until next June.

Just two weeks ago, the council rejected the developer’s request to allow medium-density housing on a 5.4-acre parcel north of Crestview Avenue near the clubhouse of a proposed golf course.

Current zoning for the planned development would have limited the parcel to five single-family homes.

But a lobbying effort by the developer prompted a second look Wednesday by the council, which decided to consider the request again in June. “I would like to see what they’ve done to the project by June,” said Councilman Mike Morgan, who led the opposition to the bid two weeks ago but introduced the motion to reconsider the request.

When it was initially approved, the Spanish Hills project was to contain 157 single-family homes, and 60 condominiums lining a golf course.

Under Camarillo’s growth management plan, if the council eventually approves the request for more condominiums, the developer would not be allowed to build the additional units until 1994.
