$91,000 Infusion for Watts Group

* Watts Health Foundation’s Third World Arts Festival kickoff benefit was held Oct. 2 at the South Pasadena home of architect Winston Roberts and his wife, Paulette. The kickoff and Oct. 5-6 festival in Watts raised $91,000 for ongoing medical services to low-income people. The foundation, founded in 1967, is headed by Dr. Clyde W. Oden.

* ICAN Associates for Abused Children will receive more than $50,000 in net proceeds raised at its Oct. 4 celebrity event hosted by ICAN Associates and the Los Angeles Football League Alumni Inc. Producer Alan Landsburg and Los Angeles Raider Marcus Allen were honored for helping to raise awareness of child abuse. Proceeds will be used in public awareness efforts, special ICAN programs and community child-abuse prevention and treatment centers in Los Angeles County.

* NARSAD (National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression) raised more than $100,000 Oct. 6 during its gala at the Ritz-Carlton, Huntington in Pasadena. Carol Burnett and Jennifer Jones Simon were among the more than 360 guests who honored UCLA research psychiatrist Dr. Daniel X. Freedman. Proceeds will be used for research into the causes, cures, treatment and prevention of severe mental illnesses.

* Los Angeles Regional Foodbank’s “Freeze Out Hunger” campaign was awarded a $39,000 grant from the Fletcher Jones Foundation. The grant will help purchase freezers for participating charitable agencies.

* Beverly Hills Hadassah honored actress Marlee Matlin Oct. 6 at its 18th annual Major Gifts Gala at the Century Plaza. The more than $550,000 raised will be used to support Hadassah’s 60 outpatient clinics, medical center and hospital in Israel.

* Chrysalis raised $85,000 at its Founders Dinner Sept. 24 at the Biltmore. The agency helps homeless people become self-sufficient through employment and affordable housing. The Rev. Donald P. Merrifield was honored.
