Lord Joe, the only 3-year-old in the field, finished with a rush on the outside to win the $102,500 Hawthorne Breeders’ Cup Handicap over a sloppy track at Hawthorne Race Course in Chicago.

Slew the Slewor, who led most of the way in the gallop over one mile and 70 yards, finished three lengths back in second. Ankles was third in the event that was moved to the main track because of a soggy turf course.

Lord Joe returned $11, $4.40 and $2.80. Ridden by Eddie Razo Jr.,the Kentucky-bred son of Lord at War was timed in 1:42 4/5 and earned $61,500. Slew the Slewor paid $2.80 and $2.40 and Ankles $3.20.
