WALLY FILES: Wally Joyner, the Angels’ top run producer this season, filed for free agency Monday (C1). . . . The 29-year-old first baseman wants to gauge his value in the baseball market, though the Angels still hope to re-sign him. . . . “If I was a free agent, I’d check it out,” said Angels exec Whitey Herzog, but he added: “I think ballplayers who live in (Southern California) don’t realize how nice they’ve got it here. The weather is great, there’s no rain and no doubleheaders.”

Helene Elliott

Helene Elliott was with the Los Angeles Times’ Sports department from 1989 to 2024, first as a staff writer and then, starting in 2006, as a columnist.
