Day-Care Operator Placed on Probation

A Reseda day-care center operator who admitted growing marijuana and keeping a loaded rifle within reach of children was placed on probation Tuesday and fined $5,000 in Van Nuys Superior Court.

Kim E. McIntyre, 29, also was ordered by Judge Leon Kaplan to perform 240 hours of community service. Kaplan cited McIntyre’s lack of prior arrests in giving her probation instead of jail time.

McIntyre, who operated a day-care center in her home in the 19500 block of Vanowen Street when arrested in July, 1990, could have been sentenced to four years in prison.

She pleaded no contest in April to five counts of child endangerment--one for each of the children in her care at the time--and one count of cultivating marijuana.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Teri M. Hutchison said that police arrested McIntyre after receiving an anonymous tip that marijuana was being grown at her house.

Detectives found an eight-foot-tall marijuana plant extending over a back-yard fence next to children’s toys, and a loaded rifle in an unlocked bedroom, Hutchison said.

Police reported that McIntyre said she was growing the marijuana for her boyfriend. State officials revoked McIntyre’s day-care permit after her arrest.
