Friendly Salute: The struggle for democracy in the Soviet Union touched the hearts of some employees of the Stovall’s Best Westerns of Anaheim motel chain. To show their support, Stovall employees created a poster with the headline “A Salute to Our Friends.” The poster has a group photograph of the employees and their signatures.
The employees sent the poster to the Soviet newspaper Pravda, and Pravda printed the poster on Oct. 3 with the text translated into Russian.
“They literally put their lives on the line for freedom and democracy,” said Bill O’Connell, director of operations for the chain of five motels near Disneyland. “We wanted to show the citizens of the Soviet Union we admired their courage and were with them in their time of difficulties.”
