Arcadia : Yosemite Climber Rescued

Share

An Arcadia man was one of four rock climbers rescued from the steep face of El Capitan at Yosemite National Park after spending a bitterly cold and rainy night there.

National Park Service rangers on Sunday flew by helicopter to the top of El Capitan and rappelled 700 feet down to rescue Simon Peck, 27, of Seattle and David Megerle, 32, of Boulder, Colo.

Later in the day, rangers rescued Russ Walling, 30, of Compton and Eric Erickson, 36, of Arcadia. They, too, had spent the night, and both suffered frostbite.

“It was cold and windy up there,” said Kris Fister, a park spokeswoman. Temperatures Saturday night fell below 30 degrees.

El Capitan is 7,559 feet above sea level, rising 3,600 feet from the valley floor.
