NAMESAKE: Billy Bathgate, former mayor of San Juan Capistrano and well-known farmer, chortles that he’s only read parts of E.L. Doctorow’s “Billy Bathgate.” . . . “I’d rather work outdoors than read,” he says. But he admits he’s getting a lot of ribbing from friends who wonder if he will see the Dustin Hoffman movie which bears his name, opening countywide today (F1). . . . “I guess I’ll have to, just to keep folks from asking about it all the time,” he says.
