OXNARD : Medical Center Gets $500,000 Donation

St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard has received a $500,000 donation for its new Oxnard hospital from a longtime agricultural leader in Ventura County.

The donation was made by the Joseph I. Friedrich Foundation in memory of Joseph I. Friedrich, who died at the hospital earlier this year after a long illness.

Friedrich, a descendant of two pioneering Oxnard families, had extensive farmland holdings in the county and elsewhere in the state. His grandfather, John Borchard, donated the land at F Street and Doris Avenue where the present hospital was founded in 1912.

The donation will be used for the intensive-care unit in the new hospital, which is being built near Rose Avenue and Gonzales Road. Completion is targeted for next summer, said Kaj Sorensen, executive vice president of St. John’s Foundation.

The gift pushes the hospital’s “Vision 1990s” fund-raising campaign past the $4.6-million mark. The effort has a goal of raising $6 million to help finance construction of the new hospital.
