YORBA LINDA : Plan to Bill Drunk Drivers Considered

Share

City officials are studying a plan to begin billing motorists picked up for drunk driving for the Police Department’s cost in making the arrest.

Councilman Irwin M. Fried proposed the idea at a recent council meeting, in part because the downturn in the economy has forced cities to find new ways to defray costs. City officials will attempt to calculate how much time an officer spends in arresting a drunk driver. The cost will be determined from hourly wages and other expenses.

The city of San Juan Capistrano recently imposed fees to recover the cost of arresting intoxicated drivers. Yorba Linda, which contracts for public safety services with the Brea Police Department, attempts to recover the cost of any city property that is damaged or destroyed by a reckless motorist.
