Major Airlines Set 2 Service Records: The nation’s largest airlines in September posted their best mark for on-time arrivals since the Transportation Department began collecting such data four years ago. Their mishandled baggage record also was the best ever. The department found that the 12 biggest carriers had an 87.9% on-time mark in September and a mishandled baggage rate of 4.34 per 1,000 passengers. Previously, the best on-time record was the 85.6% mark set in September, 1988, and the top baggage handling performance was the 5.04 per 1,000 record reached last June.
