Pirouette on over to Claremont on Tuesday to see Les Ballets Africains, an energetic company of 35 dancers and musicians who since 1958 have served as the national ensemble of Guinea.
The dance performance troupe incorporates styles from the four regions of Guinea and blends traditional dance with African storytelling, acrobatics, comedy and drama.
Les Ballets Africains also uses brilliantly colored native costumes and native instruments such as the Peuhl flute and the Djimbe, a percussion instrument for which their West
African nation is famous.
Founded in 1952 by Guinean choreographer Keita Fodeba, Les Ballets Africains has toured
the world many times. The troupe will perform in Claremont Colleges’ Bridges Auditorium at 8 p.m.
Tickets, ranging in price from $16 to $27, are available at the box office at 4th Street and College Way or at Ticketmaster outlets. Credit cards are accepted at (800) 6600-ART. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 8 p.m. the day of the performance.
