The United States was in South Vietnam with an unquestionable noble cause: to defend it against the communist invasion and to keep it free and truly democratic. We failed in our attempt (and were) blamed for indirectly causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people in search of freedom. But we must keep this noble cause because without it, the United States is no longer the leader.
Politically, the United States has never been so powerful as it is now, while communist Vietnam is at its weakest position politically as well as economically. Now is the very right time that we again must prove that we deserve the name of freedom defender, that the United States can again fulfill the noble cause that it failed 16 years ago: to help transform Vietnam into a free and democratic country; (to show) that this country is always the human-rights champion.
