FILLMORE : Report on Bilingual Classes Accepted

Share

Fillmore parents will be notified before their children are enrolled in bilingual classes if a recommendation by a task force is approved by a council of district administrators, officials said.

The Fillmore school board accepted the task force’s report Tuesday and will pass it along to the council.

After parents complained about the program to the school board, the task force of parents, teachers and administrators spent two months studying the program.

The group concluded that communication with parents was the weakest part of the program.

Under the task force’s recommendation, the system used at San Cayetano School to create ethnically balanced classrooms would be revised.

This year, students were assigned to bilingual classes in the fall, and parents who objected had to have them moved to another classroom. Next year parents would be able to choose before classes are assigned.
