Florida Term-Limit Proposal Challenged

Opponents of term limits for Florida politicians asked the state Supreme Court on Friday to take an initiative off the 1992 ballot.

The opponents, who include prominent former state officials, said the court should decide the constitutionality of the proposal before it is submitted to voters.

The initiative would prevent members of Florida’s Legislature, the six independently elected Cabinet members and the state’s congressional delegation from appearing on the ballot after serving eight years. The governor and lieutenant governor currently can serve only two four-year terms.

The measure would not apply retroactively to officials in office.
