No decision will be made by the San Francisco 49ers about signing a third quarterback until doctors examine Steve Young and it becomes clear whether or not he will need to go on injured reserve, Coach George Seifert said.

Young met with doctors Friday and if surgery is necessary on his injured knee it would be performed today, Seifert said.

Seifert said practice team rookie Bill Musgrave will back up Steve Bono on Sunday against New Orleans.

Musgrave, a fourth-round draft pick by the Dallas Cowboys this year out of Oregon, was cut at the end of training camp and signed by the 49ers for their practice squad.

Quarterback Don Majkowski of the Green Bay Packers didn’t practice, but his status for Sunday’s game against the Buffalo Bills won’t be determined until shortly before game time, Coach Lindy Infante said.

Majkowski suffered an injured left hamstring during last week’s loss to the New York Jets, but was able to practice Wednesday and Thursday before sitting out Friday.

If Majkowski can’t play, Plan B free agent Mike Tomczak will get his first start for the Packers.
