Don Becker; Writer and Producer of Radio Serials

Don Becker, 83, a veteran writer and producer of radio serials and probably best known for his lengthy tenure as co-author of the popular “Life Can Be Beautiful” melodrama. From 1938 to 1954, the show portrayed the loving relationship between a maturing girl known as “Chichi, girl of the streets” and Papa David, a neighborhood philosopher who owned the Slightly Read bookstore. The show became so popular that it was known by its initials LCBB and then as “Elsie Beebee.” Becker also wrote or produced such melodramas as “The Life of Mary Sothern,” “The Man I Married,” “This Day Is Ours” and “We Love and Learn.” In Cocoa Beach, Fla., of cancer on Oct. 18.
