PHNOM PENH : Can He Go Home Again?
Cambodian resistance leader Prince Norodom Sihanouk is scheduled to return home Thursday after 13 years in exile. Sihanouk will be accompanied on the trip to this capital from Beijing by an old adversary, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.
Sihanouk’s return was made possible when the government and opposition signed a peace agreement in Paris last month, paving the way for 70% demobilization of the government and opposition armies and U.N.-supervised elections.
The resistance leader and Hun Sen have been moving closer together since a June peace conference in Jakarta, Indonesia, ended in failure.
Some analysts speculate that the two may form an alliance to consolidate power, at the exclusion of two other factions in Sihanouk’s resistance movement.
