MOORPARK : Deaf Might Attend Burbank Schools
Deaf children from Moorpark may be eligible to attend Burbank public schools under a new agreement between the Moorpark and Burbank school districts.
The Moorpark Unified School District board unanimously approved on Tuesday an agreement to allow two deaf children from Moorpark to attend the Burbank schools.
The district will decide on a case-by-case basis whether to refer other deaf children to the Burbank program, said Charles L. Smith, an assistant superintendent in Moorpark.
The Moorpark school district does not have teachers trained in sign language who are needed for children with severe hearing loss, Smith said.
Several Moorpark children attend special programs for the deaf at schools in Simi Valley and elsewhere in the county, he said.
Burbank schools have a program that places deaf and hearing pupils together in a class with two teachers, one deaf and one hearing, said Carl Kirchner, a spokesman for the program.
Conejo Valley Unified School District is the only other Ventura County district that sends deaf students to Burbank schools, Kirchner said.
