Nothing like a little Scottish dancing accompanied by the beat of the Motor City to raise money for a good cause. “An Evening of Motown Memories” will benefit the Orange County chapters of the Sickle Cell Anemia Program and the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation with a concert featuring Gladys Horton of the Marvellettes and an exhibit of Motown memorabilia.

The benefit, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Westminster Cultural Arts Center, is being sponsored by the Strathleven Scottish Dancers, the Nicholson Pipes and Drums and the Florence Ballard Fan Club. (Ballard, one of the original Supremes, died at 33 in 1976.) The dance troupe will perform its Scottish steps to the sounds of Motown before the concert.

Horton and a group of backup singers will perform Marvellettes hits such as “Don’t Mess With Bill,” “Playboy” and “Please Mr. Postman” to prerecorded music. Betty Kelly, who sang with Martha and the Vandellas during the group’s peak years, will recite her own poetry, inspired by the ladies of Motown.

The charities, which will receive all proceeds from the event, were chosen because Horton’s eldest son was born with cerebral palsy and fellow Marvellette Georgeanna Tillman was a victim of sickle cell anemia.

Alan White of Los Angeles, who is president of the Florence Ballard Fan Club, will exhibit almost 200 items from club members’ personal Supremes collections. Items include rare footage of the Supremes, posters, a Diana Ross doll, drinking glasses, song sheets and rare album and 45 single record sleeves. Photographs of the Marvellettes and Martha and the Vandellas will also be on exhibit.
