THOUSAND OAKS : Schools to Receive Free Library Cards
Thousand Oaks teachers who live outside the city will be able to use two city libraries for free thanks to a decision by the City Council to issue $55 library cards to each school in the Conejo Valley Unified School District.
The decision will benefit teachers at 26 district schools, including 18 elementary schools, four intermediate schools and four high schools, Supt. William Seaver said Thursday. Each school will get three cards.
Since Oct. 1, the city has required all non-residents to pay a $55 annual fee before checking out books from the Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park libraries. Primary and secondary school students who attend school in Thousand Oaks do not have to pay a fee to borrow books.
Seaver said teachers and parents have complained to the district about the policy. About 285 teachers do not live in the city, he said.
Seaver said that most of the demand for library materials comes from elementary school teachers who use the books to supplement textbooks used in teaching reading, history, geography and social studies.
