CAMARILLO : Principal Named to School Board

Camarillo’s Pleasant Valley school board has appointed an elementary school principal to fill the empty seat on the five-member board, school district officials said.

The board voted 3 to 1 late Thursday to appoint Ricardo A. Amador, 44, to serve the one year remaining in the term of former board member Maria Tejada, spokeswoman Sherry Cole said. Tejada resigned Sept. 30.

The vote appointing Amador, principal of Art Haycox Elementary School in Port Hueneme, broke a one-hour deadlock in which two board members held out for Amador and two members supported candidate Alan Murray, spokeswoman Gloria Nowlin said.

The board interviewed eight candidates in addition to Amador and Murray.

“It was very difficult,” board President Leonard Diamond said Friday. “We were really impressed by the quality of all the candidates, especially the last two.”

Amador will not begin to serve on the board until mid-December. State law gives Camarillo residents 30 days to file petitions requesting that the district instead hold a special election to fill the empty seat. The petition signatures of at least 1 1/2% of Camarillo’s registered voters would be required, Cole said.
