A woman who used her 3-year-old daughter as a go-between to sell crack cocaine has been sentenced to life in prison.

A jury in a Texas criminal court deliberated for 20 minutes Thursday before handing up its decision following testimony from police that they had bought crack in September from the daughter of Yvonne Jackson, 22.

Police officer A. P. Calaway told a jury in State District Judge Mary Bacon’s court that the girl took money from police during an undercover operation and came back with a cigarette pack filled with crack.

“My mama keeps them in here,” Calaway said the girl told him as she handed him the pack.

Jackson was convicted on a charge of cocaine possession, and her attorneys said they were shocked at the harsh sentence. But prosecutor Greg Serres contended that it was justified.

“Using her daughter to sell crack is one of the most atrocious things I’ve ever heard of,” Serres said.

The drug possession conviction was Jackson’s second in six months, Serres said.

Jackson’s daughter and three other children have been in the custody of Harris County Children’s Protective Services since her arrest.
