Subplot Shocker

The preshow announcements for “L.A. Law” (NBC, Oct. 31) were right. I was shocked by who the two new lovers are. Is this the best the writers of this once-fine show can do to surprise me? If the show has no better idea than an interracial affair as their best “surprise,” then it doesn’t know the difference between shock and surprise.
