SIMI VALLEY : City to Buy Land for Rail Depot, Parking
Simi Valley officials have agreed to buy two parcels of vacant land to be used for a new commuter rail station and parking facility.
The city will buy the 6.4 acres for $1.9 million, using money from the sale of Proposition 116 rail bonds, officials said Monday. The state-issued bonds were approved by voters in June, 1990.
Asst. City Manager Mike Sedell said the city is planning to build a rail platform and a 600-car parking facility on the land south of Los Angeles Avenue and west of Stearns Street.
The platform will replace the depot at Los Angeles and Surveyor avenues.
In addition to accommodating regular Amtrak passenger service, the unstaffed platform will handle commuter rail service that will link Simi Valley and Moorpark with downtown Los Angeles beginning in October, 1992.
That rail service will offer special fares and schedules for commuters. Plans call for four trains to leave for Los Angeles in the morning, with four returning in the evening.
