CAMARILLO : Planners Revoke Fruit Stand’s Permit

Share

The Camarillo Planning Commission has revoked the permit of a roadside produce stand located along the south side of the Ventura Freeway.

In a unanimous decision Tuesday, the commission agreed that Tom Staben had failed to live up to all the technical conditions attached to the permit that he first received in 1983.

Violations included keeping too many storage containers on the site and displaying farm equipment to promote the stand.

In 1983, Staben farmed a 74-acre parcel that straddled Conejo Creek south of the Ventura Freeway, and sold a portion of the produce from the stand.

Two years ago, Staben lost the lease to the farmland, retaining control of just the one-acre site for the stand. In recent months, the stand remained closed.

Staben corrected several of the technical violations. However, he did not attend Tuesday’s hearing to plead his case.

The revocation does not prevent Staben from applying for a new permit that only covers the one-acre site of the fruit stand, commission Chairman Walt Lusk said.
