A 25-year-old Chula Vista man whose car had broken down on Interstate 5 was killed early Wednesday while flagging down a motorist for help, officials said.
Juan Carlos Gonzales of the 500 block of 4th Avenue was struck by a car on I-5 about 12:40 a.m. when he stepped into traffic, medical examiner’s investigator George Dickason said.
Gonzales’ car had broken down in the shoulder of the northbound lane, just north of the Interstate 805 split, Dickason said.
Del Mar resident Laura Rogan, 24, swerved to avoid Gonzales, but Gonzales walked into the path of the car, a California Highway Patrol spokeswoman said. Gonzales died at the scene.
