The City Council unanimously passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking in city-owned buildings, including public lobbies.

The ordinance, which will go into effect in 30 days, will affect City Hall, the Human Services Building and other civic facilities. Community centers and public gymnasiums, including the Edward and Angelene Backs Community Building and the Chester Whitten and L. Jack Gomez recreation centers, will also be covered.

Violations carry a fine of up to $100 for the first offense, $200 for the second and $500 for each additional violation within one year. The measure passed Tuesday.
