Fumes Force School to Dismiss Pupils Early
More than 580 children were dismissed early Friday afternoon from Nelson Elementary School in La Puente after irritating vapors from a manufacturing plant in nearby City of Industry reached the school.
The leak occurred at 12:50 p.m. at A & E Plastics on Proctor Avenue, a Los Angeles County Fire Department official said.
A machine for making plastic food containers malfunctioned and the chemicals polystyrene and ethyl benzene were released to relieve pressure, the official said. The fumes drove workers out of the plant. The school was dismissed at 2:40 p.m. as a precaution. One worker and a child were treated at the scene, the fire official said.
