Nicaraguan Bishops Chastise Government

MANAGUA, Nicaragua —
Roman Catholic bishops issued a strongly worded pastoral letter Sunday blaming both President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro’s government and the leftist Sandinista opposition for the country’s poverty and political unrest.
The Nicaraguan Bishops Conference, including Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo, said the government has failed to establish respect for the country’s laws, leading to a wave of corruption and crime.
