Computer Workstation Sales Slip: Shipments of high-powered computer workstations, previously unaffected by the computer industry recession, fell significantly in the third quarter, according to the market research firm Dataquest. The six leading vendors of workstations--which have traditionally been used for technical computing but are growing more popular as office machines--saw sales fall to $1.7 billion in the third quarter from $1.9 billion in the second quarter, Dataquest said. Market leader Sun Microsystems was hardest hit, with revenue dropping to $571 million from $741 million the prior quarter. IBM and Digital Equipment also saw their sales drop. Hewlett-Packard Co. and Silicon Graphics Inc. registered gains.
