Howard P. Allen, retired Southern California Edison chairman, resigned as a director of CalFed Inc. for health reasons, CalFed announced.

The Los Angeles-based thrift holding company said Allen was urged by his doctors to cut back on his work load. There are no immediate plans to replace him, CalFed said.
