Notes on a Scorecard - Nov. 27, 1991

It is time for a change in Anaheim. . . .

Both John Robinson and the Rams will benefit if he does not return for a 10th season as coach. . . .

Robinson would have little trouble eventually finding a job with a franchise that is not so concerned with the bottom line of the ledger that it winds up on the bottom line of the standings. . . .

Nine seasons is long enough for a coach to spend with one NFL team. Tom Flores spent nine with the Raiders. He didn’t make the playoffs his last two seasons. Robinson didn’t make the playoffs this season or last. . . .

The Rams, who are being embarrassed too many Sundays and Mondays, need a fresh approach. . . .

Of course, the question is whether Georgia Frontiere would be willing to pay the decent wage necessary to bring Bill Parcells, Buddy Ryan or some other established coach to Rams Park. . . .

Then again, would any big-name coach be willing to work for Georgia Frontiere? . . .

Elevating someone from the assistant coaching ranks is always a crapshoot. . . .

The Raiders had no luck with Mike Shanahan, but are enjoying success with Art Shell. . . .

It has not been announced yet, but the Angels have made an important and positive move by hiring Ray Poitevint as vice president in charge of international baseball operations. . . .

Poitevint, a longtime scout who most recently worked for Harry Dalton with the Milwaukee Brewers, is perhaps the most knowledgeable observer of the game in Latin America and the Orient and has excellent contacts. . . .

Former Montreal first baseman Andres Galarraga’s home run slump should continue in St. Louis’ spacious Busch Stadium. . . .

New York Giant personnel man Tom Boisture is among the front-runners to become general manager of the Green Bay Packers. . . .

The Award of Hope dinner honoring Bruce McNall Saturday night at the Beverly Hilton Hotel raised $500,000. Upon receiving the award, McNall announced that he would match the amount in a contribution made in the name of his friend and business partner, Magic Johnson, to AIDS research at the City of Hope. . . .

After the dinner, McNall, Wayne Gretzky and John Candy took McNall’s jet to Winnipeg, where their Toronto Argonauts won the Grey Cup over the Calgary Stampeders on Sunday. . . .

Golden Pheasant, the 5-year-old horse owned by McNall and Gretzky, won the $2.77-million Japan Cup the same day. . . .

Will the Stanley Cup be next? . . .

Hockey lost a wonderful coach and goodwill ambassador when Bob Johnson, who coached the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Stanley Cup championship last season, died Tuesday. . . .

“There was no one more dedicated to hockey in this country than Bob,” said Bob Miller, the King broadcaster who announced University of Wisconsin games in 1968-73, when Johnson coached there. . . .

Top-ranked Miami would be in trouble if it had to play a tougher opponent than the Big Eight champion in the Orange Bowl, after losing its best runner, Stephen McGuire, because of a knee injury in the Boston College game. . . .

The Army-Navy game will be played on Dec. 7, the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. . . .

USC guard Harold Miner, who scored 43 points in the Trojans’ loss at Nebraska Monday night, may contend for the NCAA scoring title. Last season’s champion was Kevin Bradshaw of U.S. International with a 37.6-point average. . . .

Kent Desormeaux and Pat Valenzuela seemingly claim foul on each other more than any other two jockeys at Hollywood Park, making it particularly noteworthy that Desormeaux will substitute for the suspended Valenzuela on Best Pal in the $200,000 Citation Handicap Saturday. . . .

The Shark Shootout, which has raised $2.3 million for Ronald McDonald’s Childrens Charities the past three years, will remain at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks for at least the next two years. . . .

A couple of hours before the Ram-49er game Monday night, PGA champion and former kicker John Daly hit golf balls and kicked field goals to hype the Skins Game this weekend at PGA West in La Quinta. Longest drive: An unmeasured boomer that cleared the roof of the stadium. Longest field goal: 44 yards.
